Learning Support
Learning Support at JFK is designed to support anyone experiencing challenges in their learning, especially those with special educational needs.
Year 7 students are assessed at the beginning of the year. If it is thought the student needs a boost, then there are a number of options that will be offered. These include workshops, in-class support from teaching assistants, mentoring and various clubs.
Workshops
Students work with Learning Support Teachers to build up their confidence in literacy, reading and spelling. The strategies given to students help them across the curriculum.
Drop-in-Club
Each lunchtime, between 1.45pm and 2.15pm, a member of the Learning Support Team is on hand to help and support students in Years 7 and 8, who need a little more help with homework.
Reading Support
Students are invited to read one-to-one with a member of the Learning Support department or a Sixth Former during morning registration. This is a golden opportunity to improve reading skills.
Games Group
The purpose of this club is to help encourage appropriate interaction between peers. This aim is achieved through fun games, including board, team and work games.
Mentoring
Some students may need extra support that is not academic. At JFK some students are given the opportunity to see a Learning Mentor. Areas dealt with include organisation, homework, conduct and friendships. This support helps students make the most of their learning.
Study Skills
In Years 10, 11 and Sixth Form some students are given extra support, providing them with the opportunity to work on coursework using school resources and facilities. Learning Support teaching staff lead this. Exam and revision techniques are also discussed with students.
